2011 Annual Appeal Donors

THANK YOU to the 2011 Annual Appeal Donors!!

We hope you have had a chance to see the poster of the mock thermometer in the library lobby.  It’s bursting with books to symbolize the level of contributions which blew the lid off the 2011 Annual Appeal fundraising goal of the Friends of the Madison Public Library. Once again, the Friends would like to give a round of applause to those generous donors who contributed the lead sixteen gifts that challenged the town to match $31,000. Over 350 people responded with an enthusiastic show of support, meeting that challenge and upping the ante to over $39,000. With a 6.5% return on the appeal letter, the final tally for the fund drive was $70,481, proving in no uncertain terms that the library is a cherished part of this community. The proceeds from the fundraising events of the non-profit Friends group support the collection of books, DVDs and music CDs, library programs for children, teens and adults, and technology. The Friends are incredibly grateful to every person who helped make the 2011 Annual Appeal such a huge success. Click HERE for a full list of 2011 Donors.

Thank you to one and all!

2011 Matching Gift Challenge

JOIN THE FRIENDS MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE

The Friends of the Madison Public Library (Friends or FMPL) are reaching out to all Madisonians to ask for your help in our mission of supporting the Madison Public Library.  Since 1938, the Friends have provided the Library with volunteers, advocacy and funding for new acquisitions for the collection, programs and technology. You may be familiar with our fundraising endeavors such as the popular Drew Minicourse Series, the Annual Benefit Gala in March and Touch-A-Truck biannually in August.

Following the tradition of providing ongoing financial support, FMPL is pleased to present a Matching Gift Challenge for you! Several generous residents (see list) have pledged lead donations toward this year’s Annual Appeal. Your gift at any level – $25, $50, $100 or more – through the end of 2011 will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $31,000!! Thanks to these donors, you have this special opportunity to double the impact of your dollars!

When we are asked to speak about the reasons to support the Madison Public Library, we find it easy to talk at length about its benefits such as:

  • Free children’s programs, like this past summer’s “One World, Many Stories” which offered numerous activities to the 500+ children who participated
  • Free adult events, like the Summer Seminar Series which attracted over 700 attendees, and other programs on current topics of interest
  • Free entertainment, like Shakespeare in the Courtyard and the evening film series
  • Free access to computers
  • Free access to the changing collection of books, periodicals, CDs and audio books

Two new free programs this Fall: 1) E-readers available for loan and 2) The Museum Pass Program which will grant you and your family free admission to participating area/NYC museums by borrowing pass cards just as you would borrow a book.

You can see the recurring theme is that many of the Library’s amenities are free in support of the official name of the Library – “the Free Public Library of the Borough of Madison”. Over 7000 Madison residents have their free Library card which gives access to these wonderful programs and activities.

What we don’t always talk about is that each of these free offerings has a cost attached.  Residents of Madison are familiar with the financial stress the Borough is facing. It has resulted in reduced Library support by the Borough even while Library costs have increased. Borough support helps to provide for basic expenses including staffing, maintenance and overhead.

With the expected continued reduction of this support, the Library is counting on FMPL to not only maintain but increase its financial assistance.

We continue to be amazed by the way the Madison community always steps up to help the Library it loves. Over the years, due to the charitable efforts of donors like you, FMPL has raised thousands of dollars for the collection of books and media and to provide programming activities. As the Library plans for 2012, FMPL is asking for your continued help with a 100% tax-deductible donation.

Your donation makes a difference…and with this Matching Gift Challenge it will make a double difference!

Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Sincerely,
Pat & Mary Beth
Pat Tagg, Chair FMPL                           Mary Beth Cooney, Vice-Chair FMPL

P.S. If your company has a matching gift program be sure to include your company’s form to maximize the impact of your gift. See the last page for a list of companies.

The Friends of the Madison Public Library is a 501c3 tax-exempt organization.

2011 Friends Annual Benefit

Friends Annual Benefit

A good time was had by all as the Friends of the Madison Public Library held their Annual Benefit on Saturday, March 5, 2011.

An enthusiastic crowd of supporters gathered to celebrate the library and to join the Friends in recognizing the many contributions of Drew University of Madison to the library community. Graciously accepting the library’s thanks, Drew Executive Director of Housing, Conferences and Hospitality Patricia Naylor said she was very pleased to have a partnership between the university and Madison’s library.

“Our institutions have much in common,” she said. “We share a love of learning, joy in the discovery of new concepts and delight in the exchange of ideas. “We welcome the opportunity to share the expertise of our faculty with you,” Naylor noted.

Popular Mini-Courses

Friends Chairperson Patricia Tagg highlighted Drew’s instrumental assistance in orchestrating the Friends’ “Touch-A-Truck” fund-raising events in the summer, and 19 years of teaming up with the library to bring the community the Drew Mini-Course Series.

The Drew Mini-Courses are short, non-credit courses taught by the faculty of Drew University and others, and hosted by the library’s Chase Room auditorium. They are open to the general public interested in learning for pleasure.

The Drew Mini-Courses, ranging from art and music to history and politics, are extremely popular, Tagg explained, and have become a major source of fund-raising for the Friends, bringing in more than $340,000 in 2010 alone, particularly impressive given that the program’s main purpose has always been enrichment, not fund-raising.

Madison resident Frank Benedict jump-started the program back in 1991. Benedict, then a recent retiree, had been seeking a way for the community to gain access to high-quality academic programs without having to pay the high tuition of regular college courses. Benedict connected with Drew’s Director of Continuing Education and Career Services Ronald Ross, who had been looking to initiate a community outreach program, and the Drew Mini-Course Series was born. Said Naylor, “The mini-courses are education in its purest form: teaching those who are coming to the class for the sake of learning. No papers, no exams, no grades,” she explained, drawing appreciative laughter and applause from the crowd.

Drew Mini-Courses are offered to the general public with each class meeting for two hours, once a week, for five weeks in the library’s Chase Room. Tuition for one course is $85, and $65 for each additional course. For information about the series, more information, visit http://www.rosenet.org/drewminicourses.

Museum Passes

Also at the March 5 cocktail party, Tagg disclosed an exciting new service the library has in the works.

Library cardholders will soon be able to borrow admission passes from the library to use as free entry to selected museums in the metropolitan area, including several in New York City. The program is being supported by the Friends in honor of the educational and cultural opportunities offered to the community in cooperation with Drew University.

Proceeds of the Drew Mini-Course Series and all Friends fund-raising events go to support special programs and expanded materials that fall outside of the library’s normal budget. The Friends of the Madison Public Library is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

2011 Chairman’s Annual Report

Pat Tagg, FMPL Chair

Chairman’s Annual Report

Our Annual Meeting is a day when Friends’ takes stock, reflects on the year past and enjoys the fruits of its labor. Looking back the library has had to accept budget cuts that affected not only operations and acquisitions but staffing as well. We’ve witnessed a difficult reorganization take place… yet the library has survived with grace, trimmer but able-bodied, still flexible and forward thinking.

Friends sympathized with what was happening and worked to not so much change course as affect it. And, indeed we did. We stepped up our fundraising efforts to the extent that 2010 was the highest grossing fundraising year to-date bringing in over $90,000 for the year. Looking back at the Friends’ agenda in late 2009, early 2010, I observed some major shifts occurring with our volunteer group, our technology advances and fundraising efforts—all of which combined to change our dynamic and allowed us to reach greater heights.
