2011 Matching Gift Challenge

JOIN THE FRIENDS MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE

The Friends of the Madison Public Library (Friends or FMPL) are reaching out to all Madisonians to ask for your help in our mission of supporting the Madison Public Library.  Since 1938, the Friends have provided the Library with volunteers, advocacy and funding for new acquisitions for the collection, programs and technology. You may be familiar with our fundraising endeavors such as the popular Drew Minicourse Series, the Annual Benefit Gala in March and Touch-A-Truck biannually in August.

Following the tradition of providing ongoing financial support, FMPL is pleased to present a Matching Gift Challenge for you! Several generous residents (see list) have pledged lead donations toward this year’s Annual Appeal. Your gift at any level – $25, $50, $100 or more – through the end of 2011 will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $31,000!! Thanks to these donors, you have this special opportunity to double the impact of your dollars!

When we are asked to speak about the reasons to support the Madison Public Library, we find it easy to talk at length about its benefits such as:

  • Free children’s programs, like this past summer’s “One World, Many Stories” which offered numerous activities to the 500+ children who participated
  • Free adult events, like the Summer Seminar Series which attracted over 700 attendees, and other programs on current topics of interest
  • Free entertainment, like Shakespeare in the Courtyard and the evening film series
  • Free access to computers
  • Free access to the changing collection of books, periodicals, CDs and audio books

Two new free programs this Fall: 1) E-readers available for loan and 2) The Museum Pass Program which will grant you and your family free admission to participating area/NYC museums by borrowing pass cards just as you would borrow a book.

You can see the recurring theme is that many of the Library’s amenities are free in support of the official name of the Library – “the Free Public Library of the Borough of Madison”. Over 7000 Madison residents have their free Library card which gives access to these wonderful programs and activities.

What we don’t always talk about is that each of these free offerings has a cost attached.  Residents of Madison are familiar with the financial stress the Borough is facing. It has resulted in reduced Library support by the Borough even while Library costs have increased. Borough support helps to provide for basic expenses including staffing, maintenance and overhead.

With the expected continued reduction of this support, the Library is counting on FMPL to not only maintain but increase its financial assistance.

We continue to be amazed by the way the Madison community always steps up to help the Library it loves. Over the years, due to the charitable efforts of donors like you, FMPL has raised thousands of dollars for the collection of books and media and to provide programming activities. As the Library plans for 2012, FMPL is asking for your continued help with a 100% tax-deductible donation.

Your donation makes a difference…and with this Matching Gift Challenge it will make a double difference!

Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Sincerely,
Pat & Mary Beth
Pat Tagg, Chair FMPL                           Mary Beth Cooney, Vice-Chair FMPL
