Libraries throughout NJ and the State Library face serious budget cuts due to Governor Christie’s proposed 74% reduction in state funding and Assembly Bill A2555 which proposes the elimination of the required minimum local funding for public libraries.
Local public libraries and thier patrons face the loss of important services including the statewide interlibrary loan and delivery service (close to 700,000 items moved last year); online databases; statewide Summer Reading Programs; closing of the Library for the Blind and Handicapped and loss of Internet and email services to many libraries. Each library also faces a 50% loss in State Aid (anticipated $8,000 for Madison).
